In a world where so many children are left without love, guidance, or a safe place to call home, there are extraordinary individuals who rise above their own hardships to fill that void. Tusaiwe Munkhondya is one of those remarkable individuals whose life story has deeply moved me. Her journey is nothing short of inspiring—one that could have easily been marked by despair, but instead is defined by resilience, love, and an unyielding spirit of generosity.

Born in Malawi in 1999, Tusaiwe’s life didn’t start with the kind of support and stability most of us take for granted. Abandoned by her mother as a baby, she was raised by her grandfather. From the very beginning, life was a challenge. Yet, despite the odds, she persevered, showing a strength that would shape her future in ways no one could have predicted.

At just 16 years old, Tusaiwe became a mother herself, facing rejection and hardship on her own. But that wasn’t the hardest part of her journey. When her son, Jeromy, was diagnosed with autism and mistreated at daycare, something inside her shifted. It wasn’t just about protecting her son anymore—it became a mission to protect and uplift countless other children who faced the same neglect and abandonment.

Tusaiwe’s story touched me on a level I can’t fully explain. The depth of her compassion, her ability to turn pain into purpose, and her unwavering dedication to children in need is a beacon of hope. She is not just a survivor; she is a force of love, and an inspiration to us all. It’s people like Tusaiwe who remind me of the power of one person to change the world.

YANA: A Safe Haven for Over 200 Children

That moment of realization led to the birth of You Are Not Alone (YANA) Foundation in 2021. What started as a small initiative to provide care for one or two children quickly turned into a full-scale mission to rescue, shelter, and educate Malawi’s most vulnerable. Today, YANA is home to over 200 children—orphans, abandoned babies, teenage mothers, and children with special needs.

Tusaiwe doesn’t just run an organization; she mothers these children herself, providing not just food and shelter but love, care, and a sense of belonging. Many of the children she takes in come from devastating backgrounds—abandoned at birth, neglected, or subjected to abuse. Under her care, they are given a second chance at life.

A School for Every Child

One of Tusaiwe’s most remarkable achievements is her commitment to education. She founded an inclusive school that serves children of all abilities, ensuring that no child is left behind. YANA now operates:

  • A preschool for young children

  • A primary school for vulnerable youth

  • A special needs school for children with disabilities

  • Mental health services for emotional and psychological support

Many of the children at YANA had never stepped foot in a classroom before. Thanks to Tusaiwe’s relentless efforts, they now have access to quality education and the tools they need to build a brighter future.

The Heart of YANA: A Mother to Many

What makes Tusaiwe’s work truly extraordinary is her deep, personal connection to the children she helps. This is not just a job for her—it’s her life’s purpose. She wakes up every day to cook for them, teach them, and tuck them in at night. For children who once knew nothing but rejection, she is the mother they never had.

Her story is a testament to unbreakable resilience, unconditional love, and the power of one person to change the lives of many. She has built not just a shelter, but a family.

How You Can Support YANA

Despite her incredible impact, Tusaiwe’s work is not easy. YANA relies on donations to provide food, medical care, and education for the hundreds of children in its care.
